Functions of the FICAN West
The Tyks Cancer Centre represents a new way to organize cancer treatment and research in the area of the Hospital Districts of Southwest Finland, Satakunta and Vaasa.
The Hospital Districts of Southwest Finland, Satakunta and Vaasa, together with the University of Turku, founded the Tyks Cancer Centre in the fall of 2015. In the end of 2017, the work was further enhanced through the agreement to establish FICAN West. FICAN West is one of the five regional cancer centers of the Comprehensive (national) Cancer Center Finland (FICAN). The Tyks Cancer Centre resides organizationally under the Hospital Director.
FICAN West does not participate in clinical patient care. Rather, its responsibility areas are cancer prevention, diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation and development of cancer research and training within the special responsibility area of Tyks. Its duty is to guarantee and follow that patients have equal access to treatment, to follow the quality of cancer diagnostics and treatment, to see to it that diagnostics and treatment develop in a more unified direction and to promote the fruition of high-level research.
