The most common tumours among children are different forms of haematological tumours, e.g., leukaemia. Of the tissue tumours, the most common ones are tumours of the brain, kidney, adrenal glands and extremities.
These tumours are examined with comprehensive CT- and MRI-studies, some of which are performed with the child anesthetized.
After the chemotherapy courses, the tumour may be removed surgically. With the exception of brain tumours, paediatric cancers are operated in the paediatric operating ward. Usually the tumour is biopsied before drug treatment is instituted.
The treatment of children with tumours is multiprofessional. Children with tumours are treated in the haematology ward, paediatric intensive care unit and the paediatric operating ward. Support to the family in important.
