The following units, operated on the basis of the license required by the medicines act, are part of the pharmaceutical services of Southwest Finland:

Clients of the pharmaceutical services of Southwest Finland

The clients of the pharmaceutical services of Southwest Finland are all the hospitals of the hospital district and the following public sector parties outside the hospital district:

  • Kemiönsaari municipal social and health services
  • Lieto municipality / Härkätie social and health services
  • Loimaa town social and health services centre
  • Paimio-Sauvo health centre
  • Paimio town
  • Pyhäranta municipality
  • Pöytyä joint authority public health care
  • Pöytyä municipality
  • Raisio social and health centre
  • Salo town social and health centre
  • Sauvo municipality
  • Taivassalo municipality social services
  • Uusikaupunki town social and health centre health services

Duties of the pharmaceutical services of Southwest Finland

The duty of the pharmaceutical services of Southwest Finland is to provide the pharmaceutical services of their clients, which include the following:

  • Pharmaceutical logistics, which includes ordering, storing and delivering medication and storing the mandatory reserve supplies
  • Manufacturing medication required in the treatment of patients not available commercially. For example, the small amounts of medication required in the treatment of infants and in demanding specialised care procedures.
  • Injections and infusions individually prepared for the treatment of cancer, whose processing requires special facilities due to the chemical nature of the medical substances
  • The pharmaceutical responsibility of preparing radioactive medication
  • The logistics of clinical medicine trials and the preparation of medicine
  • Pharmaceutical services in the wards, where the pharmaceutical staff of the services works in the interprofessional work group in the units that treat patients
  • Medical press releases and instructions
  • The co-ordination of the joint acquirement of medication, including the three hospital districts and Åland

About 10 people work in the Pharmaceutical services of Southwest Finland, of which two thirds are pharmaceutical staff, qualified chemists and pharmacists.
