Pain Clinic

We examine and treat patients suffering from difficult, long-term pain conditions and plan their rehabilitation. We offer consultation to the operational branches of Tyks. We are also responsible for the regional development of pain management services and participate in the education of health care professionals.

You need a doctor's referral to be admitted.

Our services include

  • multiprofessional assessment (physician, psychologist, nurse)
  • patient education
  • pharmacological therapy
  • pain management group rehabilitations
  • spinal cord stimulation
  • information about pain patients and their close relations

A clinic fee is collected for a visit.

We admit about 2000 patients per year. Approximately half of the patients are admitted from primary health care centres and half from different clinics of Tyks.

If you have problems with Stimulators and IT-pumps during closures:

If a technical problem occurs:

  • Shut down the device (patient controller / magnet)
  • Outside of office hours contact Tyks call centre on tel. 02 313 0000. They will forward the call to stimulator nurse or doctor of the Pain clinic.

If malfunction occurs, please contact the Tyks Emergency services.

Course of patient assessment

When a patient is admitted to the pain clinic, he/she will be sent a pain questionnaire, which he/she will fill in and bring to the first visit. The patient may be scheduled for an appointment with a doctor or a multiprofessional assessment, based on the referral.

During the multiprofessional assessment, the patient will meet up with a physician, psychologist and a nurse on the same day. Psychological examination will continue with another visit within a week. At the end of the assessment a recommendation for treatment and rehabilitation will be compiled. Sometimes a multiprofessional appointment with the physician, psychologist, nurse and the patient and his/her close relation and, possibly, primary care doctor can be arranged.

Multiprofessional work group

We treat patients in co-operation with primary health care according to the regional chains of care. The referral does not necessary imply that the patient is admitted to the clinic, as pain clinic professionals can give instructions for pain management to the referring physician.

The multiprofessional pain management group meets once a week at the pain clinic. An anaesthesiologist, psychiatrist, specialised dentist, psychologist and nurses and a social worker attend these meetings.

At these multiprofessional meetings, referrals are processed, and individual plans of patient treatment and rehabilitation are made. Meetings are also consultation forums.
