We treat severely ill children and adolescents under 16. Our largest patient groups are surgical trauma and operation patients requiring intensive care, severe infections, spasm patients, diabetic ketoacidosis patients and full-term infants. Some of the patients are placed in a respirator. Every patient is monitored and many laboratory analyses are performed by bedside equipment. We are the only paediatric intensive care ward in the hospital district of Southwest Finland.
There is also a resuscitation group in our ward, who perform all resuscitations of the U-hospital.
Our patients are admitted on an emergency basis without referrals.
Patients can be transferred to our ward directly from operation rooms, inpatient wards of other hospitals.
A daily inpatient fee is collected from inpatient stay. Patients under 18 pay a maximum daily inpatient fee of 7 days a year.
An important part of our work is to take the whole family into account and to support the family members. In our ward, the parents can participate in the treatment of their child by assisting the staff.
Open visiting hours for parents, primarily between 10 am and 10 pm. Other visitors need to be arranged separately.
The rooms in our ward are three person open rooms. In addition, we have two single isolation rooms. Every room has a TV and a DVD player.
There is a break room for the parents with a coffee maker in the ward.
If required, the patient's treatment can include special workers such as physiotherapists, social workers and dietitians.
Nurse Esko Roselli received the Achiever of the year award of the hospital district in 2013 for his work on developing children's emergency care simulation education.
