Treatment of vascular surgery patients
The vascular surgery unit is responsible for arranging surgical treatment for patients in the Hospital District of Southwest Finland with arterial diseases, excluding heart surgery and procedures on the arteries of the brain.
Vascular surgery may be an open surgery or an endovascular procedure via an arterial puncture, such as balloon angioplasty. These procedures are performed by a radiologist, but a vascular surgeon is responsible for the treatment of the patient, and patients are admitted to the vascular surgery ward for the procedure.
The most common vascular diseases treated at the vascular surgery unit include peripheral artery disease in the lower extremities, abdominal aortic aneurysm and carotid artery stenosis.
In our hospital district, procedures on the arteries of the brain are performed by the division of clinical neuroscience, and the heart centre is responsible for cardiothoracic surgery (including thoracic aortic procedures).
The vascular surgery unit is also responsible for arranging the treatment of venous disorders, excluding acute lower extremity deep vein thrombosis, which is treated by the division of medicine (internal medicine) and the emergency medical services.
The most common venous disorder treated at the vascular surgery unit is the venous insufficiency of lower extremities, which is also known as varicose veins.
Arterial disorder patients in the Hospital District of Southwest Finland are treated in the Tyks main hospital, where all venous disorder patients from Turku and the nearby municipalities are also treated.
Whenever possible, venous disorder patients from Loimaa, Salo, Uusikaupunki and the surrounding municipalities are assessed and treated in the hospitals of these locations as close to the patient’s home as possible through the services provided by the vascular surgery unit.
Most venous disorder patients are treated as outpatients with endovascular procedures. All open surgery operations on veins performed in our hospital district are performed in the Tyks main hospital and the Salo hospital.
